Collaboration between openIMIS and academia

openIMIS is supported by various universities and their networks to help broaden its knowledge base and increase its reach. These academic institutions are building various capacities related to openIMIS, ranging from software users to implementing organizations. They are also using openIMIS to demonstrate health financing workflows.

The decision by universities to work with openIMIS was the result of various needs: a lack of practical health financing know-how among students, limited learning tools and real-life scenarios to demonstrate the operational side of social health protection (enrollment, claims submission, reports, etc), and the lack of linkages between clinical procedures in medical schools and information systems, particularly on health financing.

If you or your academic institution is interested in working with openIMIS, please contact the openIMIS Coordination Desk ([email protected]).

Germany

A team of students at MARS, the Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Applied Sciences in Mannheim, is working on the development of a new mobile app for openIMIS. The project is part of a semester-long course in which students are tasked with developing a missing feature for an open source project.

Indonesia

The openIMIS Country Hub in Indonesia has introduced openIMIS as a teaching tool for the Master of Public Health (MPH) curriculum at Universitas Gadjah Mada. The university launched its two-year MPH in 1990 and admits 200-300 students into the program each year. At present the MPH offers ten majors.

By adding openIMIS to the curriculum, MPH students will be better able to understand the health system and health insurance context through various learning methods, practical use tutorials, training by example, assignments and feedback. For openIMIS, this offers a dual advantage: not only will future health systems policy makers and managers be more knowledgeable about openIMIS, but the Initiative will also receive real-world implementation knowledge and feedback to improve the tool further.

The Philippines

The openIMIS Country Hub in the Philippines consists of partners from the University of the Philippines Manila, St Luke’s Medical Center and the Asian Medical Students Association Philippines.

The Country Hub, together with the university partners, are developing a clinical skills lab manual for openIMIS in collaboration with faculty from the University of the Philippines Manila and St Luke’s Medical Center. This lab manual is being designed to showcase the usage of openIMIS in a clinical setting, and the flow for information for a generation and submission of a medical claim.
